Artist Statement
Painting allows me to express the things I could never say with words. Each of my pieces reveals an element of trust, where I didn’t follow logic but followed my heart, and where uncertainty gives way to a lovely sense of completion. They are a visual record of that experience.
I usually begin a painting with only the concept of the first color. I rarely see past that first step until I’ve laid the color down. The colors and passages then reveal themselves to me, telling me what comes next, and eventually telling me when to stop. The weathering effects of nature and age are a common visual theme in my work; the subtleties and patinas they create -- on surfaces both natural and man made -- often find their way onto my canvas. There’s a sense of feeling grounded and complete when I’m making art that is a continuous validation of the path I’ve chosen. When I’m painting, I feel as though I’ve come home.
For me, making art is an ongoing process of problem solving and seeking resolution in visual chaos. My desire is to communicate this process with sincerity, and my hope is that the result is an expression of integrity and authenticity that brings a sense of warmth to the viewer.
